Novelis Zhenjiang Plant Achieves ASI Performance Standard Certification
Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, September 29, 2022 – Novelis Inc., a leading sustainable aluminum solutions provider and the world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, today announced that its Zhenjiang Plant in Jiangsu Province, China, has been awarded the Performance Standard Certification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), a global, multi-stakeholder, non-profit standards setting and certification organization. Novelis Zhenjiang Plant
"We are delighted that Novelis’ Zhenjiang plant is now certified to meet ASI’s environmental, social and governance standards," said James Liu, Managing Director of Novelis China. "Driven by our purpose of Shaping a Sustainable World Together, we continuously dedicate ourselves to being the most trusted partner for our customers and to advancing the use of low-carbon, sustainable aluminum solutions to accelerate the transition to a circular economy in partnership with various stakeholders in China."
As a leading sustainable aluminum solutions provider and the world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, Novelis has been prioritizing reducing its carbon footprint and that of its customers. As such, Novelis has committed to be carbon-neutral by 2050 or sooner and to reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2026. The "dual carbon" goals, which are in line with the core concept of China’s high-quality development, have become the major focus for businesses in the country. Increasing the amount of recycled aluminum in its products is at the core of Novelis’ carbon reduction strategy. In addition, the company seeks to reduce waste to landfill by 20%, energy intensity by 10% and water intensity by 10% by 2026.
Novelis aims to achieve ASI certifications in all its plants worldwide. Novelis has achieved both the ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Certifications at all of its Korean and European manufacturing sites. In Brazil, Novelis’ Pindamonhangaba facility and all of its 14 scrap collection centers hold the ASI Performance Standard Certification. In addition, three of the company’s plants in North America hold Performance Standard Certifications.
ASI Certified
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said, “We sincerely congratulate Novelis on achieving Performance Standard Certification at its Zhenjiang rolling facility. Aluminium applications for the Aerospace sector must meet stringent operational performance requirements for strength, ductility, damage tolerance, and fatigue, among others. This ASI Performance Standard Certification demonstrates the company is also addressing the increasing global focus on the environmental, social and governance performance of aluminium production processes and operations.”
Inaugurated in 2013, Novelis’ Zhenjiang plant is designed and equipped with research, development and manufacturing capabilities to meet fast-growing regional and global demand for technically advanced aluminum products for aerospace and commercial plate applications. In October 2021, Novelis signed an official agreement with Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province, to invest approximately $375 million to expand its rolling and recycling capabilities at the Zhenjiang plant and integrate it with the Changzhou plant, which produces aluminum sheet for the automotive market. The expansion includes a closed-loop recycling system for automotive aluminum to help enable the automotive and transportation industries’ transition to a more sustainable future.
