Novelis Yeongju Plant Achieves Full ASI Certification
Achieving both Performance Standard and Chain of Custody certifications drives responsible, sustainable aluminum supply in Asia
SEOUL, February 24, 2022 - Novelis Inc., the world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, today announced that its Yeongju Plant located in Gyeongsangbuk-do province, Korea, has been awarded the Chain of Custody Standard Certification by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). The ASI Chain of Custody Standard complements the Performance Standard by certifying not only the production of responsible aluminum but also its sourcing and processing along the value chain. The plant achieved ASI’s Performance Standard Certification in 2021 and is now fully certified by ASI.
"By achieving the dual certification, our Yeongju plant has now been independently certified to meet ASI standards, demonstrating that the sustainable aluminum solutions we provide to our customers are responsibly sourced and produced,” said Sachin Satpute, Executive Vice President, Novelis, and President, Novelis Asia. "These certifications clearly establish Novelis as a supplier of choice and a partner to our customers in achieving their own sustainability goals.”
The dual certification further strengthens the company's ability to meet the increasing needs of its customers in Asia for independently certified, sustainable aluminum. In addition, it demonstrates Novelis' broader commitment to sustainability and underscores its ambition to be the world’s leading provider of low-carbon, sustainable aluminum solutions that advance Novelis’ business, as well as the aluminum industry and society toward the benefits of a circular economy.
Striving to fulfill that ambition, Novelis has made a commitment to be net carbon neutral no later than 2050. Novelis has also established goals for 10% reductions in energy and water use and 20% reduction in waste to landfills by 2026.
Novelis aims to achieve ASI certifications in every region where it operates. In Asia, Ulsan Aluminum, a joint venture between Novelis and Kobe Steel, has been awarded ASI's Performance Standard Certification in November 2021. In Europe, all 11 of Novelis’ manufacturing sites have achieved ASI’s Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard Certifications. In South America, Novelis' plant in Pindamonhangaba plant in Brazil earned ASI's Performance Standard Certification and the company is working toward ASI certifications in North America.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said “We warmly congratulate Novelis on achieving Chain of Custody Standard Certification for its Yeongju plant. With the significant volume of aluminium scrap processing, the recycled feedstock for its coil and sheet products, and dual ASI Certification, this facility is an important node in the circular economy, providing its customers the ability to source responsibly produced aluminium for their downstream products.”
The Novelis Yeongju plant, an integrated aluminum rolling and recycling facility, operates Asia’s largest aluminum beverage can recycling center. With an annual capacity of 340,000 tons, the Yeongju recycling facility recycles more than 18 billion used beverage cans each year.
