Novelis Europe Plants Achieve ASI Certifications

Certifications allows Novelis to supply independently certified, responsibly sourced and sustainably manufactured aluminium products

ZURICH, 6th February, 2020 – Novelis Inc., the world leader in aluminium rolling and recycling, today announced that its plant in Ohle, Germany, was awarded the Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Certification by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI).

Novelis’ Ohle plant, which supplies foil and packaging products to such diverse applications as coffee capsules, foil trays for the food industry, aluminium coil cores and flexible tubes for Automotive and Caravan, has been successfully certified against the ASI Performance Standard. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain.

“Guided by our purpose to shape a sustainable world together, we are focused on implementing sustainable manufacturing processes and operating ethically and responsibly,” says Emilio Braghi, Senior Vice President & President Novelis Europe. “We are proud to receive our first ASI certifications for both the Performance Standard and the Chain of Custody as it is another important milestone demonstrating our strong commitment towards sustainability.”

In addition, Novelis’ Ohle plant was also awarded the ASI Chain of Custody Certification for its joint venture Alunorf, the world’s largest aluminium rolling and casting facility, located in Neuss, Germany. The ASI Chain of Custody Standard complements the ASI Performance Standard, certifying not only the plants and their practices but also the physical metal that is produced and processed through the value chain. Certification against both ASI standards means Novelis is able to supply independently certified, responsibly sourced and sustainably manufactured aluminium products to its customers.

“ASI warmly congratulates Novelis on these two new ASI certifications. Semi-fabrication facilities are the critical link between upstream production and a wide range of downstream use sectors and we are delighted to see the ever-growing commitment to responsible practices by key players such as Novelis”, adds Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI.

Novelis is committed to achieving ASI certifications across all its European manufacturing facilities.
