ZURICH, October 31, 2013 – Novelis, the world leader in aluminium rolling and recycling, announced today that it completed its second annual “One Novelis Volunteer Month.” Throughout the month of October, more than 300 Novelis Europe employees in Germany, UK, France, Italy and Switzerland volunteered 2,000 hours as part of the company’s efforts to support the communities in which it operates.
The goal of the One Novelis Volunteer Month is for each Novelis location to complete a large-scale volunteer activity aligned with the company’s overall sustainability program. Novelis employees at 35 sites in 11 countries around the globe took part in this year’s program.
“Novelis is committed to supporting efforts that promote safety, math and science education, recycling and environmental awareness, to ensure the best possible opportunities for the next generation,” explained Erwin Mayr, Senior Vice President and President, Novelis Europe. “Our employees at Novelis are excited to be a part of this initiative and are working to make a real difference in our communities.”
This year’s initiatives across Europe included a range of events:
- In Warrington, UK employees made improvements to buildings and the garden center of a charity which provides employment opportunities for learning-disabled adults.
- Pieve and Bresso, Italy teams organized plant visits and lessons about aluminium processing for students of mechanical and material engineering.
- Zurich, Switzerland’s efforts focused on environmental sustainability by clearing debris, restoring animal shelters and other work to prepare part of a forest in the local community for winter.
- Sierre, Switzerland team held a technology lesson for local primary school students at its plant and innovation center.
- Novelis Germany in Göttingen, Ohle and Lüdenscheid implemented computer software robotics programs with local schools in support of science education, while the Nachterstedt plant brought local high school students on-site to experience chemistry, biology and physics outside of the classroom.
- And in Voreppe, France, employees raised money and awareness for cystic fibrosis during a running event.
One Novelis Volunteer Month is part of the company’s larger corporate social responsibility commitment; last year the company invested more than $2.5 million in programs around the world.
