Novelis Oswego Facility Reaches Four Million Safe Work Hours

OSWEGO, NY, Nov. 11, 2009 – Novelis Inc., the global leader in aluminum rolled products, announced today a major safety accomplishment at its Oswego, New York, facility, which has achieved 2-1/2 years without a lost-time accident.   During this period, the employees at the Oswego manufacturing facility have completed a total of four million work hours without any loss of time from work.

"This accomplishment is a testament to our team’s commitment to working safe every day and protecting each other," said Luc Boivin, Oswego Plant Manager.  “This is the first time in the history of the plant that we have achieved this major milestone.  Our success is built on a culture that fosters a safer working environment.”

Novelis’ Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program focuses on working closely with all employees to ensure safe behavior in the workplace.  The facility applies a variety of training programs and other proactive techniques to its safety management.

Novelis Oswego has been recognized for its high standards in fostering a safe and healthy work environment.  The plant is certified to several internationally recognized management systems, including ISO 4001 (Environmental), OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety) and ISO 9001 (Quality) certified.  The operation has also been heralded for its commitment to safety. The Oswego facility has been recognized with the Novelis President’s Safety Award for excellence in safety over the past several years.

“This remarkable achievement could not have been accomplished without the personal commitment of each and every employee,” stated Peter Sheftic, Human Resource and EHS Manager at Oswego. “Their commitment to following recognized safe work practices and procedures, identifying risks and looking out for their fellow employees demonstrates their personal belief that safety is a fundamental value at Novelis.”

The Novelis Oswego plant is the company’s largest wholly owned aluminum fabrication facility in North America.  Equipped for aluminum scrap remelting, ingot casting and hot and cold rolling, the Oswego plant generates premium aluminum sheet products and recycles used aluminum beverage cans.   In 2006, the plant was the first Novelis facility to launch the company’s innovative Novelis FusionTM technology, a process that simultaneously casts multiple alloy layers into a single aluminum rolling ingot. This marked the first time that any company has achieved the commercial production of multi-alloy aluminum ingots.  Many of the aluminum products produced at Oswego are purchased by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and distributors, who carry out further processing before selling them to a wide variety of manufacturers.  End markets include automotive, transportation, building sheet, beverage can packaging, and consumer and industrial products.

Novelis Inc. is the global leader in aluminum rolled products and aluminum can recycling.  The company operates in 11 countries, has approximately 12,000 employees and reported revenue of $10.2 billion in fiscal year 2009.  Novelis supplies premium aluminum sheet and foil products to automotive, transportation, packaging, construction, industrial, electronics and printing markets throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia.  Novelis is a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Limited (BSE: HINDALCO), one of Asia's largest integrated producers of aluminum and a leading copper producer.  Hindalco is a flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group, a multinational conglomerate based in Mumbai, India.  For more information, please visit www.novelis.com.
