(NYSE: NVL) (TSX: NVL) today announced that, for the second consecutive year, its manufacturing plant in Pindamonhangaba, Brazil, has won the 2006 "Top Gold Award" for Health, Workplace Safety, and Environmental Management from the Brazilian Safety Agency (ABS).
Novelis is the only company to have received the Top Gold Award since the awards program began in 1998.
The Pindamonhangaba ("Pinda") plant, located near Sao Paulo, Brazil, is the largest aluminum rolling and recycling facility in South America, and the only plant in the region capable of producing the technically demanding flat- rolled sheet required for aluminum beverage cans. The plant employs approximately 800 people.
The ABS award program recognizes companies that perform at or above regulatory standards in the areas of occupational accidents and disease prevention, natural resources preservation and fire and emergency response.
