National Recycling Coalition Honors Novelis For Leadership In Recycling

Washington, DC (February 2, 2005) – The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) presented its Seventh Annual “Recycling Works” Recognition Award to Novelis during a gala celebration last night at the University Club in Washington, D.C. The “Recycling Works” Recognition Award is bestowed upon stellar organizations that represent leadership in recycling, conservation of the environment, and the fulfillment of the National Recycling Coalition's mission.

Novelis executives Martha Finn Brooks, Chief Operating Officer, and Brian Sturgell, President and CEO, proudly display the National Recycling Coalition award for leadership in recycling.

“Novelis is the only aluminum company that has made its environmental commitment to recycling a fundamental part of its business,” said Kate Krebs, executive director of the NRC. “We are pleased to honor that commitment and the company's demonstrated leadership with NRC's ‘Recycling Works' Recognition Award.”

“Novelis is very honored to accept this prestigious recycling award,” stated Brian Sturgell, President and CEO, Novelis Inc. “Recycling is a fundamental element of Novelis' corporate sustainability commitment. We are dedicated to fostering efforts to promote the economic, environmental and social value of recycling aluminum.”

As the world's largest aluminum beverage can recycler, Novelis annually recycles more than 20 billion used aluminum beverage cans in North America alone and nearly 30 billion globally. Many Novelis plants have the facilities to recycle post-consumer aluminum as well as scrap aluminum generated during the manufacturing process.

In addition to building partnerships with customers to generate economic and environmental recycling benefits, Novelis has active memberships in the aluminum industry and environmental organizations to promote the benefits of aluminum recycling to the public. As a founding member of Cans for Cash, a partnership between the Aluminum Association and Habitat for Humanity International, the company has been an integral part of the effort to help raise more than $2.5 million dollars through aluminum can recycling with money that goes to build Habitat homes across the United States.

The gala was attended by about 140 leaders from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) presented the keynote address. “The work of the folks at Novelis, which has a good presence in my home state of Oregon, is a great example of pioneering sustainable business practices while being responsible stewards of the environment,” said Senator Wyden.

The Seventh Annual “Recycling Works” Awards Gala was sponsored by 22 companies and organizations, including five Premier Sponsors: Anheuser-Busch Companies, the Buy Recycled Business Alliance, The Coca-Cola Company, Novelis, and WM/Recycle America Alliance LLC.
